Hello: I always find it annoying when fellow DK folks bleat about HOW INCREDIBLY UNFAIR IT IS that X can’t be dealt with. Rather than be annoyed about the matter of postage for mail in ballots in San Diego, California, I propose the following. As long as it is not illegal or against Daily Kos’ foggy rules and regulations, I propose to pledge $50 of my own money toward absentee ballot postage. How this would work, I am not immediately sure but I leave this to minds different and/or better than mind to resolve.
As a first suggestion, perhaps something like a GoFundMe effort to cover postage due ballots with your local registrar of voters may be a point where pressure can be applied towards a solution. I am corresponding with my the San Diego Registrar of voters with an initial question of how much postage this years absentee ballot will cost. This year it should be a large ballot with a number of initiatives and one stamp may technically not be enough postage by weight. I have always put on two first class stamps ($0.94) on my absentee ballot to make sure it arrives OK. My next question to the registrar will be about how they handle postage due ballots. The absentee ballot return envelopes usually say that they will not be delivered without first class postage.
Ideally absentee ballots should say, Bulk rate, postage to be paid by addressee,” (if mailed by 10/30). You may affix first class postage if you with to save the County of San Diego money. However, that is an effort for another day as it is a long lead time effort.
Who will take the lead on this and who will join me in funding this? What say you all? Beats belly-aching about it any day of the week.
